HC Deb 17 March 1953 vol 512 c190W
Mrs. White

asked the Minister of National Insurance what sum has been paid in benefit to unemployed persons in each of the years 1946 to 1952 in England and Wales and in the county of Flint, respectively.

Mr. Turton

The approximate amounts paid in England and Wales in the years 1947–52 (figures for the calendar year 1946 are no longer available) were as follows: 1947, £21 million; 1948, £15 million; 1949, £15 million; 1950, £14 million; 1951, £10 million; 1952, £19 million. The amount paid in 1952 by employment exchanges covering the county of Flint was £116,000. I have no records of amounts paid in individual areas in previous years.
