HC Deb 05 March 1953 vol 512 cc54-5W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Education (1) how many students entering the universities in the years 1951–52 and 1952–53, respectively, were granted major awards, and minor awards; and how many had no grants from the local education authorities:

(2) how many university students have had their tuition fees paid by the local education authorities; and how many by the State; and how many students pay their own fees.

Miss Horsbrugh

A total of 19,047 students entered universities in England and Wales in 1951–52 (including students from overseas). Of these 2,569 held State Scholarships or other awards given by my Department and 10,285 held awards from local education authorities, of which 8,830 were major and 1,455 minor awards. The corresponding figures for 1952–53 are not yet available, but for the autumn term they are 17,967, 2,866 and 9,623 (8,049 major and 1,574 minor awards). All but a very small proportion of students holding awards from my Department or from local education authorities have their tuition fees paid. I cannot say how many of the remainder pay their own fees or have their fees paid from other sources.
