HC Deb 22 June 1953 vol 516 cc100-1W
51. Mr. D. J. Williams

asked the Minister of Transport why the Neath Bridge Scheme will not be completed until 1955, in view of the fact that the greater part of the work has already been carried out, and that when the scheme was launched in 1949 it was stated that it was expected that it would be completed in about 2½ years.

Mr. Braithwaite

Progress has been delayed by various unforeseen circumstances. Bad subsoil was encountered and navigation difficulties delayed a start on some of the piers until 1951. There was subsequently a shortage of steel, particularly the special high tensile steel for the river bridge span.
