HC Deb 16 June 1953 vol 516 cc48-9W
80. Mr. A. Evans

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he has considered the proposal of the Harlow New Town Corporation for the more extensive use of substitutes for softwood in house building; and if he has approved the additional expenditure involved.

Mr. Marples

I presume that the hon. Member is referring to eight houses already built by the Development Corporation at my right hon. Friend's request. They are intended as a practical demonstration, arranged in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works, of how and where in a house softwood could, at need, be saved without adding prohibitively to the cost. The houses and their purpose are more fully described in a circular and booklet, copies of which I am sending the hon. Member. The houses at Harlow are open for inspection until 3rd July.
