HC Deb 09 June 1953 vol 516 cc5-6W
68. Mr. Nabarro

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to state, in tabulated form in the OFFICIAL REPORT, the revenue he budgets upon raising during the fiscal year 1953–54 from each sport that remains subject to Entertainments Duty; and the total Entertainments Duty he budgets upon raising from sport, only, during the fiscal year 1953–54.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The estimate of £3½ million for the receipts of duty from sports and games can be sub-divided approximately as follows:

Sport Estimated yield in 1953–54
£
Football 1,500,000
Horse racing 1,000,000
Dog racing 500,000
Boxing 100–150,000
Speedway racing 100,000
Other sports and games 200–250,000

69. Mr. Nabarro

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the revenue he budgets on raising during the fiscal year 1953…54 from football pools tax; and by how much this tax would require to be increased, per cent., to compensate for withdrawal of Entertainments Duty on all sport.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

About £20½ million and 5 per cent. (or rather more in so far as such an increase in the rate of duty might reduce this form of betting).
