HC Deb 30 July 1953 vol 518 cc219-20W
Mr. N. Macpherson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what annual revenue it is estimated will accrue from each of the four main communities in Malaya as a result of the Registration and Licensing of Businesses Ordinance, 1953; and how this compares with the amount of direct taxation collected annually from each of the communities in the last two years for which figures are available.

Mr. Lyttelton

The estimate of 1953 revenue from licence fees under the Registration and Licensing of Businesses Ordinance is as follows:

$
Chinese 3,700,000
Indian 700,000
Malay 75,000
European 25,000
Companies unidentifiable by race 1,500,000
Total $6,000,000

The estimate for 1954 is as follows:

$
Chinese 5,831,000
Indian 1,029,000
Malay 105,000
European 35,000
Companies unidentifiable by race 2,000,000
Total $9,000,000

The only direct taxation collected is Income Tax. No figures are available of Income Tax collection by race, but the following figures are for tax assessed in 1950 and 1951:
