HC Deb 29 July 1953 vol 518 cc171-2W
Sir W. Darling

asked the Minister of National Insurance (1) what proportion of the 38,104 members of his staff expected to be at their post on 1st September, 1953, will be employed in England and Wales and in Scotland, respectively;

(2) what proportion of estimates of £19,688,000 for salaries and wages is spent in England and Wales and in Scotland, respectively.

Mr. Turton

The following figures relate to the new Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance, which has, however, not yet been established: they set out the position as it is expected to be on 1st September next.

Of the total staff in post about 8 per cent. will be employed in Scotland. The rest, with the exception of a small number in Northern Ireland and countries overseas, will be employed in England and Wales.

Of the amount provided for salaries, etc., of £19,688,000—which includes for the period up to 31st August the salaries of certain staff who will then be transferred to the Health Departments—just over £1½ million will be in respect of staff in Scotland and the balance for staff in England and Wales and for the small number employed in Northern Ireland and overseas.

Sir W. Darling

asked the Minister of National Insurance the comparable amount estimated to be spent in salaries in Scotland in his Department compared with £1,583,110 spent in Newcastle and £806,375 spent in Blackpool.

Mr. Turton

It is not possible to give this information, because much of the work done at Newcastle and Blackpool extends to the whole of Great Britain.
