§ 84 and 85. Dr. Morganasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) the amount of the loan to the island of Grenada, or its principal town of St. George's, for the water supply and sewerage scheme; what were the terms of the loan; what body will be responsible for its repayment; and how many other towns in other West Indian islands will be similarly treated;
(2) when the scheme for the water supply and sewage disposal of St. George's, Grenada, was started; when it was completed; what was the total cost; and why hon. Members of the House were not kept informed of this remedial scheme being in progress over a series of years.
§ Mr. LytteltonThe scheme for water supply and sewage disposal at St. George's, Grenada, started in 1937 and finished in 1940. It cost about £55,500. The St. George's District Board is responsible for repayment of this sum which formed part of a loan of £166,000 raised in 1936 at 3 per cent. by the Grenada Government, and repayable in 1964.
The scheme is mentioned in Colonial Report No. 1838, available in the 49W Library. There was no reason why hon. Members should have been kept specially informed about it.
I cannot say how many other towns in West Indian islands will be similarly treated. That is for colonial Governments to consider.
