§ Mr. G. H. R. Rogersasked the First Lord of the Admiralty why Robin Denny, 39, Colville Gardens, W.11, a conscientious objector, who has already served one sentence of imprisonment, is again being held in custody in Portsmouth Barracks; and if he will release him forthwith.
§ Mr. J. P. L. ThomasThis National Service man, who had completed his period of full-time service, failed to comply last year with a training notice and was sentenced to 42 days' detention. Although he was not statutorily entitled to appear before the appellate tribunal, arrangements were made for his appearance before an advisory tribunal, but he did not convince the tribunal of the genuineness of his conscientious objections.
Last month, he disregarded a further training notice and was arrested. He was sentenced to 90 days' detention on 27th June, since when he has applied to appear before the tribunal again, and his sentence has been suspended. The tribunal sits on 30th July and I will consider his release in the light of their advice.
