§ 82. Mr. Awberyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that aged people have to refuse gift parcels from sons and daughters living abroad because they are unable to pay the charges made; and if he will exempt from Customs duty and Purchase Tax gift parcels from abroad, up to a specified value, when sent by a near relative.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerThe answer to the first part of the Question is "No." As to the second part, the hon. Member is probably aware of the general concession relating to gift food parcels and to the concession covering small value gifts sent home by members of the Forces serving abroad. It would not be practicable or equitable to add to this concession one in which the deciding factor was the relationship between donor and recipient.
