HC Deb 26 January 1953 vol 510 c86W
Lieut.-Commander Baldock

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty when the light fleet carrier now building at the shipyard of Vickers-Armstrongs Limited, Barrow-in-Furness, will be launched.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

The Light Fleet Carrier, H.M.S. Hermes, will be launched by Mrs. Winston Churchill on Monday, 16th February, 1953, at the shipbuilding and engineering works of VickersArmstrongs Limited, Barrow-in-Furness.

The Hermes gives her name to the class of four light fleet carriers, three of which have already been launched, namely, the Albion, Bulwark and Centaur, but will incorporate many improvements as compared with the earlier ships of the class. The angled deck, which enables aircraft to land without the possibility of over-running catapult operating positions or aircraft parked at the forward end of the flight deck, will be embodied in the ship.
