HC Deb 26 January 1953 vol 510 c67W
27. Sir W. Darling

asked the Minister of Transport how many free ferries exist in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Braithwaite

There are at present two free vehicular ferries in England, four in Scotland and none in Wales. My information about pedestrian ferries is incomplete and I know of one only which is free to all pedestrians.

29. Sir W. Darling

asked the Minister of Transport if he will extend the public free ferry services on Rivers Thames and Clyde to the River Forth.

Mr. Braithwaite

No, my right hon. Friend has no statutory powers to give financial assistance for the purpose of freeing from tolls the existing ferry over the Forth, or to acquire it; and there are no funds at his disposal to establish a new ferry.
