asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what additional Customs and Excise staff are engaged in dealing with Purchase Tax; and the annual cost.

There has, in fact, been a small reduction in the Customs and Excise staff dealing with Purchase Tax, since an answer on this subject was given by Sir S. Cripps on 21st June, 1950.

The second part of the Question does not therefore arise.
