HC Deb 26 February 1953 vol 511 cc230-1W
69. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Health the number of deaths in England and Wales caused by diphtheria in 1952 or the latest year for which the figures are available; and further, if he will state the number of deaths from diphtheria in the year that preceded the introduction of general immunisation.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The number of deaths from diphtheria in England and Wales in 1951 was 33; the figure for 1952 is not yet available but will probably be about the same. The number of deaths in 1940 which was the year preceding the introduction of general immunisation was 2,480.
