HC Deb 04 February 1953 vol 510 cc206-7W
70. Mr. J. MacLeod

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General how far the delay in providing telephones in the seven crofter counties is due to a shortage of labour and materials or finance.

Mr. Gammans

The delay is primarily due to restrictions on expenditure which limit the amount of materials and labour available for telephone development.

Mr. J. MacLeod

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General in what areas within the seven crofter counties has new radiotelephone equipment been installed.

Mr. Gammans

Supplies of this equipment are now being delivered. The equipment will be used, in the first place, to improve the communication links with the islands off the coast and one such link, that between North Ronaldshay and Sanday, has been established. Four others will follow shortly. Details of the allocation of other links, for use on the mainland, have not been finally settled.
