HC Deb 17 December 1953 vol 522 cc102-3W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action the Metropolitan Police take to oppose the applications of those hotels and restaurants applying for licences to sell intoxicant liquors where it is the declared policy of such hotels and restaurants to operate the colour bar against the sale and service of food and drink to coloured peoples.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The Metropolitan Police do not know of any hotel or restaurant where it is the declared policy to operate a colour bar, but they are aware that in a few cases a colour bar is operated in practice. Much as I deplore this, it is not within the province of the police to oppose the grant or renewal of licences on that ground.
