§ Mr. Hamiltonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many new school places have been provided by new schools begun and completed since October, 1951; and what is the estimated increase in the school population in the same period.
§ Mr. J. StuartBetween 1st October, 1951, and 30th September, 1953, 35,081 new school places were completed. 20,076 (comprising 10,710 in new schools and 9,366 in extensions) were in buildings begun after 1st October, 1951, and 15,005 in buildings begun before that date. The estimated increase in the school population between 1st October, 1951, and 30th September, 1953, is 34,900. No exact comparison can be made between new places provided and increases in the school population because sometimes new places are provided to meet movements of population as well as increases and sometimes places for additional children can be found in existing schools without new buildings.
