HC Deb 11 December 1953 vol 521 cc287-8W
Mr. Slater

asked the Minister of Fuel of Power the present number of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Mines; how far each area throughout the whole of the United Kingdom is up to establishment; and what is the number for each area separately.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

On 4th December the total strength of Her Majesty's Mines Inspectorate was 149 inspectors. The following table shows how far the Mines Inspectorate fell short of the approved complement in each Division on that date:

Division Staff in Post Vacancies
Scottish 16 5
Northern 23 6
North Eastern 22 4
North Western 13 4
East Midlands 17 4
West Midlands 15 5
South Western 28 5
Headquarters 15 3

The total number of vacancies will shortly be reduced by five when the successful candidates from the last competition take up their appointments. A further competition is about to be announced.
