HC Deb 09 December 1953 vol 521 cc253-4W
Mr. Malcolm MacPherson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he proposes to take to remove the disadvantage under which Scottish teachers are at present placed in comparison with English teachers in respect of the possibility of their being elected to local councils under the education committees of which they serve.

Mr. J. Stuart

The associations of local authorities concerned were consulted about the recommendation of the Select Committee on Estimates that Scottish local authorities should be given the same power as English and Welsh local authorities to co-opt teachers and have indicated that they regard the proposed change in the law as unnecessary and undesirable. I am considering the recommendation further in the light of these views.
