HC Deb 09 December 1953 vol 521 cc250-1W
126. Mr. Skeffington

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what complaints have been received about flashing beacons at pedestrian crossings; and whether he has considered as an alternative lighted beacons which floodlight the actual crossing.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Although I have received a few complaints from members of the public I have received none from any of the organisations representing road users. Floodlighting was one of the alternatives tried before the flashing beacon was decided on. It was not adopted because it is ineffective in wet weather.

129. Mr. Hargreaves

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the reason for the delay in making electrical connections to the flashing beacons on pedestrian crossings in Carlisle.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The lighting of these beacons, which are now all working, is a matter for the Carlisle City Council, who, I understand, experienced some difficulty in getting them connected to electrical supply.
