HC Deb 08 December 1953 vol 521 cc208-9W
Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Works whether he is satisfied that current brick production is sufficient to meet the demands of the building programme including the repair of older houses; whether he considers the present stock position satisfactory; and if he will make a statement.

Sir D. Eccles

The production of bricks is steadily increasing. Demand next year may be greater, but if recommended economies are followed the demand should be met. The supply position of bricks cannot be judged by the size of stocks which, because of double handling charges, are always low. I hope, however, there will be some improvement this winter.

Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Works whether he is satisfied that current cement production is sufficient to meet the demands of the building programme; whether he considers the present stock position satisfactory; and if he will make a statement.

Sir D. Eccles

The cement requirements of the building programme are in the main being met. Production will continue to increase and will, I hope, enable the stock position to be improved.
