HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 c160W
78. Mr. Hardy

asked the Minister of Health what salaries are paid to staff nurses in mental hospitals; and what are the superannuation benefits.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The salary scales for staff nurses in mental hospitals and mental deficiency institutions are £390–£490 (men) and £380–£480 (women). The superannuation benefits are prescribed by the National Health Service (Superannuation) Regulations, 1950, which are rather long and complex. I am sending a copy to the hon. Member. Special benefits are provided for nurses with long service in mental hospitals and mental deficiency institutions.

88. Mr. Hayman

asked the Minister of Health how many mental nurses there are in St. Lawrence Mental Hospital, Bodmin, Cornwall; how many there were 12 months ago; and how far the hospital is now below establishment.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The mental nursing staff of the hospital including student nurses and nursing assistants consisted, at 30th September last, of 90 full-time men and 65 full-time and 37 part-time women. At 30th September, 1952, the numbers were 90 full-time men and 64 full-time and 31 part-time women. The staff is short of establishment by 21 men and 55 women full-time.
