HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 cc149-50W
43. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider the desirability of securing the inspection by his Department of all hostels for the accommodation of young people who have gone to live in hostels after being under institutional care, particularly in view of the disparity of conditions in some instances between those inspected and not inspected; what inquiry has been made into conditions of hostels not inspected; and whether he will draw the attention of voluntary organisations and local authorities to this matter.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

As far as I know, all hostels provided for the purpose of accommodating young people who have been in institutional care are run by voluntary organisations or local authorities: these hostels are inspected by the Home Office. I am not aware of any general inquiry into conditions of hostels not subject to inspection. If the hon. Member will send me information about any particular hostel, I will consider the need to communicate with voluntary organisations or local authorities.
