HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 cc157-8W
64. Mr. Beswick

asked the Minister of Labour if deferment of National Service training is granted to young men employed as, or in training as, air transport pilots; and if such deferment is the same as that of similar men employed in the Merchant Navy service.

Sir W. Monckton

The call-up of men of military age who are serving in the Merchant Navy is suspended while they remain in that employment. No such arrangement applies to men employed or in training as air transport pilots, although if the necessary conditions are satisfied young men undergoing training as civil air transport pilots may be granted deferment of call-up for the period necessary to complete their training.
