HC Deb 21 April 1953 vol 514 cc40-1W
47. Mr. Renton

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will suspend the open general licence for the import of onions from 30th June until the close of the season for home-grown onions; and whether he will restrict to 10,000 tons the imports of onions under special licence from 1st July until 15th August of each year.

Mr. Mackeson

We are not at present prepared to vary the arrangements for this year announced on 27th January which provide for the restriction of imports to 10,000 tons from 1st to 15th August and for the prohibition of imports from 16th August to 30th November. As already stated, however, these arrangements will be subject to review in the light of supplies available from home production.
