HC Deb 29 October 1952 vol 505 c208W
18. Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs why the frais de representation of our Ambassador in Moscow should amount to £49,380 or nearly twice as much as any other foreign capital.

Mr. Nutting

Thefrais de representation assigned to H.M. Ambassador at Moscow are inflated because of the unrealistic rate of exchange of 11 roubles to the £, which the Russian Government introduced in 1950. The real value of the rouble is estimated to be about 60 to the £. At this rate the frais would be about one-fifth of the figure given.
