§ Mr. EcclesThe fire occurred in the west wing of Clock Court where restoration of the structure and replanning of the apartments have been in progress for some time. The cause is not yet known. Five rooms were gutted and 12 more damaged in varying degrees by fire or water, none of them State Rooms at present open to the public. One valuable plaster ceiling was damaged, but I expect to be able to restore it. Otherwise, no artistic or historic treasures were damaged. The total loss is very roughly estimated at £12,000. Public access to the Palace is not affected.
