Miss Wardasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer on what grounds private individuals are being requested to supply information to the Treasury to assist them to carry out a routine statistical inquiry in association with the Building Societies' Association; and, in the interests of economy and the rights of individuals, if he will eliminate this inquiry.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterNo. This information, the giving of which is voluntary, is required from time to time to enable the Inland Revenue to operate the arrangement with the Building Societies which was placed on a statutory basis by Section 23 of the Finance Act, 1951. The arrangement is of advantage to the Societies and their members, and also helps to secure economy in tax administration.
