§ 37. Sir H. Williamsasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if, in order to minimise the hardship which may be caused by necessary reduction of staffs in Government Departments, steps will be taken not to fill vacancies due to wastage and also to ensure that those who, because of their age or other reasons, can easily obtain other employment should be discharged first.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterA substantial part of the staff reductions taking place in Government Departments is being achieved by refraining from filling vacancies caused by normal wastage. As for the order of discharge, where discharges are necessary, I have nothing to add to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to the hon. Member for Newport on the 26th February.
