§ Mr. CrookshankDuring the 12 months ended 31st December last, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of trained nurses and midwives in hospitals in England and Wales increased by 1,873 full-time and 441 part-time, and the number of student nurses by 520. The ratios of patients to nursing and midwifery staff in hospitals in the metropolitan area at 31st December last were (a) in teaching hospitals 1.24 to 1, (b) in other hospitals 2.89 to 1.
