HC Deb 04 February 1952 vol 495 cc69-70W
39. Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Food the quantity and cost of apples imported this winter from the United States of America and the date of the agreement; if he will explain the circumstances under which this purchase was arranged; and why the available dollars were not used to increase the supply of rationed foods.

Major Lloyd George

Up to the 12th January, 5,477 tons of United States apples had been imported on private account at an f.o.b. cost of about £160,000. The decision to allocate dollars for these imports was taken last summer in pursuance of a general policy of enabling traditional suppliers to this country to maintain at least a limited trade.
