HC Deb 16 December 1952 vol 509 c162W
90 and 91. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) whether he will make a statement on the discussions that have taken place with the Canadian Ministers now visiting this country with a view to increasing the price of gold in terms of dollars to an extent which will enable Canada to re-open the many gold mines recently closed because the cost of production is higher than the present selling price of gold;

(2) what steps he now proposes to take to obtain an increase in the price of gold in terms of dollars to an extent which will enable the many gold mines in the Gold Coast, closed because of the low price of gold, to re-open and so double the gold production in the Gold Coast.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The question of the monetary price of gold was discussed at the Commonwealth Conference, but I have nothing to add to the answer given by my hon. Friend on 27th November.
