Mr. Isaacs

asked the Minister of Labour how many hostels were administered by the National Service Hostels Corporation at the close of 1951 as compared with 1950, as set out in his Department's Annual Report for 1950 on page 103; what are the present charges at standard and sub-standard hostels, respectively; and when and by what amount the charges were last increased.

At the end of 1951 the numbers were:

54 Standard Industrial Hostels.
15 Sub-standard Industrial Hostels.
9 Industrial Hostels for Polish civilian workers.
2 Hostels for dependants of European Volunteer Workers.
2 Hostels for Civil Servants.

Five hostels were closed during the year.

Charges at the Industrial Hostels were last increased by 5s. a week on 25th February, 1952, and are now 40s. a week for men and 35s. a week for women at standard hostels, 35s. a week for men and 30s. a week for women in substandard hostels.
