Mr. Swinglerasked the Secretary of State for Scotland his estimates of the total educational expenditure of local authorities in Scotland for 1951–52 and 1952–53; of the percentages to be met from rates and from Exchequer grants, respectively; and of the amounts of direct grants and administrative expenses in connection with education by his Department.
§ Mr. J. StuartThe expenditure of education authorities in Scotland for 1951–52 met from public funds is at present estimated at £38,170,545, of which 28.6 per cent. will be met by rates of 66.3 per cent. by grants from the Education (Scotland) Funds, and 5.1 per cent. by Exchequer Equalisation Grant. The estimates of the education authorities for 1952–53 are not yet available. Direct grants, other than to education authorities are estimated at £2,927,618 for 1951–52 and £2,646,018 for 1952–53. The administrative expenses of the Scottish Education Depart- 125W ment, including the cost of inspection, for those years are estimated to be £299,820 and £322,261 respectively.
