HC Deb 20 March 1951 vol 485 c271W
Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Supply the contents and value of the German reparations steel works now in store at the Bowerfield works of Messrs. Dorman Long and Company, Stockton-on-Tees; what is being done to maintain it; and what action he is taking for its disposal and use as a steel works.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

This plant comprises dismantled rolling mills and ancillary equipment, and as much as is suitable for further use is being sold to steel makers, but some is fit only to be used as scrap. Of some 26,000 tons consigned to the Bowesfield works, 3,204 tons have been sold and offers for 6,371 tons are now under consideration. Until the disposal arrangements are completed the full value of the plant cannot be determined. Meanwhile, the plant still in store is being protected from deterioration.
