§ 101. Sir H. Williams
asked the Minister of Education what steps he is proposing to take to deal with the illiteracy problem in schools as revealed in his pamphlet on reading ability; and, in particular, whether it is intended to continue sending to secondary schools backward and illiterate pupils.
§ Mr. Tomlinson
In so far as such pupils are suitable for education in normal schools they will proceed to secondary education. The pamphlet offers help and practical suggestions to teachers, who can be relied upon to play their part in reducing the volume and incidence of illiteracy.
