HC Deb 21 June 1951 vol 489 c71W
69. Mr. Wilkes

asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of acres within Newcastle-upon-Tyne now occupied by allotment holders; the number of applicants now waiting to take over allotments within the City; whether the acreage planned to be allocated to allotment holders within the city during future years will show an increase or decrease in acreage; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. T. Williams

The total area of land in use as allotments within the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is 246 acres. Most of the sites are administered by local allotment associations who are responsible for letting the individual plots, and I am unable therefore to say how many applicants are waiting for allotments.

The area of land to be allocated for use as allotments in future years is a matter to be dealt with in the development plan for the City. The plan has not been completed, but I understand the Corporation are considering the possibility of increasing the total area of land available for allotments.
