HC Deb 28 February 1951 vol 484 cc285-6W
80. Brigadier Peto

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware of the disparity in pay of 2nd lieutenants under 20 years of age in the Royal Marines holding National Service commissions at 7s. 6d. per day compared with 2nd lieutenants in the infantry at 13s.; and whether he will recommend an increase to bring them into line.

Mr. Callaghan

The pay, as well as the status, of 2nd lieutenants in the Royal Marines, is based on the pay of the comparable rank in the Royal Navy, and a comparison with 2nd lieutenants in the Army is not relevant.

81. Brigadier Peto

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what allowances and cash grants are paid to National Service 2nd lieutenants in the Royal Marines ordered to serve in Malaya for a few months; and whether he will take steps to secure their increase.

Mr. Callaghan

Second lieutenants in the Royal Marines, whether serving on National Service or Regular commissions, are paid an allowance of 7s. a day to compensate for the high cost of living in Malaya. A small money grant is made to cover the cost of cerain articles of kit not supplied from official sources. The Malayan cost-of-living allowances are to be reviewed again shortly.
