HC Deb 02 August 1951 vol 491 cc257-8W
Mr. Walker-Smith

asked the Minister of Transport whether his Advisory Committee on Road Safety have yet considered the proposals of Mr. Edward Terrell in regard to road safety; and, if so, with what result.

Mr. Barnes

The Committee on Road Safety have set up a sub-committee to study Mr. Terrell's proposals and other suggestions in connection with the Highway Code.

Mr. J. Foster

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will draw the attention of all highway authorities to the importance of making all drains, manhole covers, traffic signal pads, etc., conform to the general level of the road surface when any roadwork is being carried out and so avoid the bumps and undulations which are so often encountered today, particularly in connection with roadside drains.

Mr. Barnes

Manhole covers, etc., are normally laid to road level when road works are undertaken, but shortage of labour and funds sometimes cause these adjustments to be postponed. I do not think that the highway authorities need reminding of the point.
