asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what general instructions have been given to his Department with regard to replying to or at least acknowledging letters from members of the public on matters of public importance.

Home Office staff are instructed to acknowledge letters from members of the public, unless it is clear that a final reply can be sent quickly.
