§ 58. Mr. A. Edward Davies
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations have been received about a Peace Treaty with Japan; what action is proposed; and when he expects to be in a position to make a statement.
§ Mr. Younger
His Majesty's Government have received communications concerning the Japanese Peace Treaty from the United States Government and all Commonwealth Governments, and have been in touch with the French, Netherlands and other interested Governments.
As regards the second part of the Question, His Majesty's Government have for some time past been urging on other Governments the need for a very early Peace Treaty, and they are pressing ahead with preparations for this, consulting Commonwealth and other Governments as necessary through the diplomatic channel.
As regards the last part of the Question, I am not yet in a position to say when it will be possible to make a statement about the current diplomatic exchanges.
