§ 50. Sir W. Smithersasked the Minister of Food when the 5,600,000 pounds of Mexican beef and gravy which he has purchased was canned; whether he is satisfied that it passes British tests for human consumption; and what provision there is in the contract that bad or damaged cans may be returned.
§ Mr. WebbThis meat was canned between 1st November, 1949, and 1st March last year. It is high-grade meat in every respect. It is completely suitable for consumption here, so much so that it is in great demand by the trade, who find it highly popular with their customers. Although there is no provision for the return of bad or damaged cans after shipment from the United States, arrangements have been made for our purchase18W to be examined in store, before shipment, by the United States Department of Agriculture.
§ 51. Sir W. Smithersasked the Minister of Food what is the cost of 5,600,000 pounds of canned Mexican beef and gravy delivered at a British port; and what expenditure of dollars is involved.
§ Mr. WebbThe delivered cost is estimated at £510,364. The dollar expenditure involved is 1,345,665 dollars.
