§ Mr. Lowasked the Secretary of State for War in how many traffic accidents his Department's vehicles have been involved in each of the last three financial years; how much has been paid in claims; and how much, approximately, these accidents have cost his Department in damage to or loss of War Department vehicles.
§ Mr. StracheyIn the financial year 1947–48, 17,201 vehicles of my Department were involved in traffic accidents in the United Kingdom in respect of which a net total of £410,391 was paid in claims. In 1948–49 the corresponding figures were 12,306 and £425,288, and in 1949–50 they were 11,857 and £251,210. I regret that similar details in respect of Commands abroad and the amounts that these accidents have cost in damage to, or loss of War Department vehicles are not readily available.
