§ 83. Mr. Rankinasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many students, private and with scholarships, are attending the new colonial universities in West Africa, East Africa, Malaya, and the West Indies.
Mr. GriffithsIn West Africa there are 295 students at University College, 45W Ibadan, in Nigeria, and 120 at the University College of the Gold Coast. In East Africa at Makerere College there are 222 students. The University of Malaya has 601 students and the University College of the West Indies 74. Separate totals for students with scholarships and private students are not in my possession, but the latter form a small minority: almost all the students' courses are financed by their governments.
