asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what success was achieved by the preliminary experiment in the underground gasification of coal at Newman Spinney, near Chesterfield; and whether his Department will continue with such experiments.

Some success has been achieved at Newman Spinney in igniting a coal seam underground and in producing combustible gas. Experience has been gained which should be of value78W when the time comes to plan a full-scale trial. In the meantime, the present experiments will go on.
