§ 129. Mr. Gammansasked the Minister of Food why, in view of the continued breakdown in the Government purchase of meat from the Argentine, he does not hand back the trade to private importers.
§ Mr. WebbI certainly have no reason to think that private importers would be able to buy more meat in Argentina than my Department, or buy it at prices more reasonable than those we are prepared to pay. In any event, the resumption of private importing of meat must be determined in the light of our ultimate policy for maintaining guaranteed prices to home farmers and long-term assurances to Commonwealth producers.
