asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the number of school classes containing over 40 pupils in 1949; and how many of those classes were in primary and how many in secondary schools.

On 31st March, 1949, there were 5,445 classes with over 40 pupils. Of these, 4,752 were in primary schools and 693 in secondary schools.
