§ Mr. Cooperasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the total number of Government employees resident in the United States of America at the present time; and what were the corresponding figures 12 and 24 months earlier.
§ Mr. Glenvil HallOn 31st August this year (the latest date for which figures are available) the total number (including members of the Armed Forces and staff locally recruited) was 1,533. The corresponding numbers 12 and 24 months earlier were 1,554 and 1,976 respectively. In addition there were in August this year 108 British Service officers serving with units of the United States Forces in exchange for a roughly corresponding number of American officers employed in this country, Eighty-four British Service officers were similarly exchanged in 1948. Particulars of the number of officers so exchanged in 1947 are not available.
