HC Deb 04 November 1949 vol 469 cc83-4W
Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will authorise the lighting of shop windows both during and after normal business hours in the period 12th-31st December, 1949.

Mr. Gaitskell

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. There is, therefore, no restriction on shop window lighting either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day under the existing Order—the Electric Lighting (Restrictions) Order, 1949, S.I. 633/1949. While I regret that I cannot agree to issue any licence covering days when the normal industrial load may be expected, I propose to lift the restrictions on public holidays, i.e. on the 26th and 27th December in England and Wales and on the 2nd and 3rd January in Scotland.
