§ Mr. Piratinasked the Minister of Health what is the local rate levied on behalf of police expenditure in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow; and what is the annual average cost to each family residing in those respective cities.
§ Mr. BevanThe police rates levied in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow for 1948–49 were respectively 1s. 9¼d., 1s. 3½d., 1s. 10d. and 1s. 2d. in the £. The figure for Glasgow is given by courtesy of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State. The term "family" is hard to define statistically and I am not in a position to give the average cost for each family.
